John Millman Fuke, April 17, 1938 - November 8, 2017

John Fuke died on the morning of November 8 in the Collingwood Marine and General Hospital after suffering from an automobile accident on September 14.

John was born in Toronto on April 17, 1938, and lived in Markham, Timmins, Belleville, Toronto, Creemore, and Collingwood. He attended high school at the Belleville Collegiate Institute and Vocational School, graduating in 1956. He then studied at the University of Toronto, earning his B.A. (Commerce and Finance) in 1960, followed by The University of Toronto Law School, from which he graduated in 1963. In 2016 he earned his Master’s degree in Theological Studies from Trinity College at the University of Toronto.

John was called to the bar in 1965. During his career he practiced with several Toronto firms including Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt; Fraser and Beatty; Campbell, Godfrey & Lewtas; Heenan Blaike; and Fogler, Rubinoff.

John was known by Wills and Estate lawyers across Canada and internationally. He worked almost all his career in the field of taxation, wills, trusts, estate planning, administration, and mediation. He served as chairman of both the provincial and national Wills & Trust Section of the Canadian Bar Association. He was a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation and delivered papers at its annual conferences as well as writing articles for its journal. He was
Vice-President, The Americas, in the International Academy of Estates and Trust Law and was a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Council. During 1987 he spent a secondment with Revenue Canada in the tax legislation area. John was named as one of the best lawyers in the Trust and Estates field in the July/August 2007 issue of the Financial Post Business Magazine special report on the “The Best Lawyers in Canada.”

John was actively engaged with a number of charitable organizations and was member of All Saints Anglican Church in Collingwood where he served as one of its Wardens. He was also a longtime supporter of The Anglican Community Compass Rose Society.

John’s wife Judy (Moran) died in June after a long illness. John is survived by his daughter Margaret, his son Michael, his brother Richard (Ellie), his nephews Tom (Amy) and Dan (Leigh), and his great-nephew and nieces John, Elizabeth and Caroline.

A funeral service for John will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 28 at All Saints Anglican Church, 32 Elgin St. in Collingwood. The service will be followed by a light lunch and a chance to meet and greet each other in the church hall. All of John’s family, relations, friends and colleagues are invited. Should the weather be inclement, please do not feel obliged to come. You will be with us in spirit.
