Obituary for Henry Knowles

Henry Knowles
Henry died peacefully on December 6, 2016 in Collingwood, with his wife of 56 years by his side. He was a man of great integrity and wisdom and a generous friend and mentor. Henry always had time to help others in need. He will be remembered by his many friends for his loyalty, broad smile and teasing sense of humor. Henry will be deeply missed by his wife Marilyn (nee Radcliffe), daughters Krista and Lori, their spouses Craig Lauer and Mike Armstrong, grandchildren, Rachel, Joseph, Jack and Patrick and sister Joan Lawrence. He was predeceased by siblings Eileen Gaudet, Barbara Winslow and Doug Knowles. Uncle Hank will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews and their children. Henry was born in London Ontario on Jan. 22, 1932, the youngest of 5 children of Anna (Dolly) Voltz and Joseph Chamberlain (Lain) Knowles. He graduated from London South Collegiate, received an HBA from the University of Western Ontario Business School and LLB from Osgoode Hall. A scholar by nature, he obtained an LLM from Yale University and MBA from the University of Toronto. The Henry J. Knowles Chair in Organizational Strategy, York University Schulich School of Business, remains a legacy to his commitment to education. Henry was a highly respected member of the Bar and Q.C. in Toronto where he practiced law over 5 decades. An accomplished authority in securities law and financial services he was Chairman of the Ontario Securities Commission 1980-1983, and served on Boards of Directors of numerous corporations. Henry’s life-long passion for skiing, running, reading and the outdoors, was surpassed only by his love and dedication to his family. Service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church, 32 Elgin Street, Collingwood, Tuesday December 13 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the Bear Estate, 300 Balsam Street. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society, Sunset Manor Collingwood, or a charity dear to Henry’s heart, Leprosy Relief Canada.
